South of Nanaimo, Ladysmith to Victoria

Just south of the Nanaimo Airport, perched above the Trans Canada and overlooking the ocean, is the charming and picturesque village of Ladysmith. Visit its quaint main downtown for shopping, galleries, and tea in the summer or view its fantasy world of sparkling lights at Christmas time. A few minutes further south, Chemainus is renown for its murals and the Chemainus Festival Theatre. Slightly further along the road but only about an hour's drive from Nanaimo, you can learn about Quw'utsun' culture in Duncan or take a wine tour of the area.

 
If you're feeling a bit frantic with the pace of the "Big Island", and want an afternoon or perhaps several days of even more laid-back lifestyle, hop a ferry to one of the Gulf Islands. BC Ferries leave from several locations on Vacouver Island and sail to and amongst the islands (Saltspring, Galiano, Mayne, North and South Pender, Saturna, Kuper and Thetis Islands). Go on an artists' studio tour, stay at a B&B, or just take in the scenery.

 

 
At the southern, balmy tip of Vancouver Island, is the regal city of Victoria. We can drive from our place in Nanaimo to downtown Victoria in two hours (and be parked and ready to shop!) Walk around the Inner Harbour, shop, dine, browse The Design District, go whale watching or do any of the other gazillion interesting things Victoria has to offer. We're always happy to have to go see our website person, the lovely and talented Isabelle, at RW Global, as it gives us an excuse to just take the whole day off work and try something new in Victoria! If you are wanting a more outdoorsy adventure check out Port Renfrew for hiking, whale watching and fishing. If you like to fish check out Choice Charters, you won't be disappointed.
